Why Parakeets Need a Balanced Meal

Parakeets are small but athletic birds and they also have a lot of energy. Contrary to what a lot of people think, these birdsneed plenty of stimulation and playful activities because these birds are clever. Because of those things, they need a healthy and balanced diet everyday. These birds would also love to have veggies and fruits as part of their diet. From time to time, it would be great for your to have these pets indulge in nuts and seeds.

As a matter of fact, parakeets can eat the same fruits that humans also eat. A few examples of these fruits are apples and oranges. When introducing fruits to these birds for the first time, all it usually takes is a slice and they will want more. Feeding your lovely budgie fruits can be a great bonding time. This session is not just feeding time but it is actually a moment where you establish trust with the little budgie. Instead of fruits, you can hand feed the little bird some seeds and nuts. Don’t forget that these budgies love vegetables to. So, why not give the little budgie a vegetable leaf such as a lettuce.

Your pet’s diet could use a lot of green vegetables. Many parakeets love the taste of cabbage leaves or broccoli leaves. More often than not, feeding parakeets leafy greens is not difficult because they can easily acquire a taste for those food. It must be considered, though, that not all green leafy vegetables are good for your bird. Some leafy vegetables can trigger calcium deficiency or liver problems. Ask your parakeet’s veterinarian first about which leafy greens to give and which ones to avoid.

A well balanced diet is also crucial when parakeet’s begin to breed. During this period, cuttlebone or a mineral block may be given to a female parakeet, in its cage, as a supplement. A very healthy bird is likely to produce bouncing chicks.

So the next time you go out to buy food for our parakeet, buy seeds, vegetables and fruits. There are so many kinds of these foods that you can add to his or her diet, but be sure to check with a vet first. Your very energetic and colorful pet will be so glad with the various flavors and food types incorporated in his or her well-balanced diet.
