Area 51 Reviews
I have read Bob Meyer's "Atlantis" novels and I thoroughly enjoyed them. But this novel is even more thrilling. Rarely have I read such a gripping tale, the plot is breathtaking in its turns and twists. I disagree with some of the critics: the characters are believable. They may be stereotypes in a way, a journalist is a journalist, a soldier is a soldier etc., but I think they are of flesh and blood and very conceivable.Meyer likes to pick up ancient and modern myths and give them a new fictitious meaning and it is always exciting when esoteric theories are turned into SF-thrillers, or inexplicable phenomena are explained by using the unlimited fantasy that fiction allows. For all those who like this kind of writing, this book is an excellent read.
First rate. I have the next four lined up. Good characters. Good storyline. Haven't come across this author before, but I'll be on the lookout.
Schöne Geschichte rund um die berühmte Area 51. Startet etwas träge, nimmt dann aber Speed auf und endet fast etwas zu happy. Gute Unterhaltung für flexible Leser. Also ich glaube fast jedes Wort...
Excellent reading! Interesting combination between fiction and reality. Additionally, he swings from known historical facts to modern times and expresses opinions for the reader to share.
I must have stepped into a parallel dimension or something. In a nutshell, this book STINKS. It takes every pop-culture tidbit of UFO mythology and New Age mysticism (crop circles, foo fighters, Easter Island, prehistoric visitations, etc.), throws in a number of one-dimensional characters, and then runs them through a cuisinart of predictable, formulatic situations. Evil government conspiracies, pyramid power, Roswell, secret Nazi scientists...It's hard to maintain any suspension of disbelief with this book, because the slightest application of logic sends the plot into a tailspin (Gosh, the Russians might be behind the foo fighters! Why didn't we think of this forty years ago?). The dialog doesn't help either, bobbing between forced exposition, slapdash "military" lingo, and generically bland patter. The only reason this book warrants even one star is because I can't go any lower.Area 51 might appeal to folks who found INDEPENDENCE DAY "realistic" and who believe little grey men are hiding in Nevada. More educated readers -- and real science-fiction fans -- will scoff at this hackneyed effort, and are strongly advised to stay FAR away from Area 51.
But the scale would't let me! This is one of the best, most awesome and astounding books I've read in a long while. The story revolves around the mysterious goings on in the secret base of the title as the military experiments with alien technology. But what is the secret with the mother ship, the Pyramids of Giza, Atlantis and the statues on Easter Island, and how is it all linked? Some amazing theories are featured which are extremely plausible. I mean, having been to Egypt myself twice, where did an advanced civilisation like those portrayed in hieroglyphs come from? This part of the book was well thought out. As a special forces operative tries to uncover the secrets with an assortment of characters drawn into the conspiracy, he makes some startling discoveries. And technothriller fans will love the airborne scenes featuring the supersecret AURORA hypersonic plane. My only criticism was the ending being rather hurried after a spuerb build-up, but I eagerly look forward to the follow-ups. Forget the X-Files, Area 51 rules!
If you read the author's own words, this book is based on myth. Not one person he uses as 'connected' has any credibility. I didn't find anything new here, but it is well written and his take on previouis scenarios of UFOlogy is interesting indeed. On the other hand, Dr. Paul Hill, 'Unconvential Flying Objects', a former NASA (30 years) discusses the phenomenia in scientific terminology (for the laymen level) and has credibility because he investigated the alien contact for the NASA. Edgar Mitchel (ex-astronaut) admits there is a cover-up, reverse engineered technology, and thinks the alien presence is non-threatening and has testified to congress. Col. Corso ('After Roswell') signed a legal sworn statement that he was involved in the cover-up for the Army at the Pentagon. The author of Area 51 covers this information only slightly. Over all, the book is better written than most of this genre and well worth reading. But don't stop here. See Hill's, Corso's, and Patton's books on amazon.com.
